DWS is a volume measurement solution that combines the power of Intel's proprietary volume measurement SDK with the MEMS solid-state LiDAR Camera L515.Software for better management of workflows such as movement and storage of luggage and products in logistics, which combines ease of use and high measurement speed.

Part 3: About camera installation and measurement

3-1. Camera installation

To achieve performance and accuracy, we recommend shooting from above (camera mounted on top of the object to be measured).


Distance and angle from the L515 camera to the box
– Distance to floor or tabletop is 0.8m or more
– The distance to the top of the box is 0.75m or more
– Distance to floor or tabletop is less than 4m
– The angle between the line of sight to the normal to the top of the box is 45 degrees

Measurement accuracy
The scale division that represents the maximum rounding error is defined by [d].This d value depends on the size of the box and the distance of the box from the camera.

About the installation of the box
– Fit the entire box in 80% of the center of the frame (within 10% of the inner edge of the frame)
– Install parallel to the floor (keep a rectangular parallelepiped and a flat surface)
– Recommended indoors (do not install in sunlight) *
– The installation location (floor or tabletop) should be matte and matte (low specular reflectance) **
* Indoor lighting without sunlight. Other light sources that emit at a wavelength of 860 nm should also be minimized
** Glossy surfaces such as reflective tape or wrap can cause measurement inaccuracies

3-2. Measurement


1) Important guidelines for obtaining the best measurement results
Make sure the L515 camera is firmly seated on the tripod (stationary)


2) Click "Next" to initialize the L515 camera


3) As part of the initialization process, the software will make adjustments to suit the floor or tabletop.It is important that the camera accurately captures the frame (floor or tabletop).The live view of the application is a depth map of the scene.At this stage, it is important that there are no objects that interfere with the measurement.
If you move the camera after calibration, you need to calibrate again.
Calibration mode: Calibration improves dimensional accuracy.Executed once while installing the box in the frame of the camera.

5) Ready for measurement.Place the box inside the yellow rectangular frame and click the "Measure" button.

8)If you encounter a general problem, you will get an error message.
- Box too close / too far
– Box is too big / too small
– A box was detected from the center of the viewing angle (FOV)

Part 4: About the sample code

The sample code of DWS is open to the public.

Two simple API calls will start measuring the box and the rest will be handled by DWS.
Define and link a callback function * and call dws_start ().
* DWS callback function:Returns 2D and 3D data to enable user view of the box in the scene as part of DWS_Box.
