LWA-SYS – The LWA Antenna System is a receive-only LWA (Long Wavelength Array) cross dipole antenna system for space exploration and astronomical research that is inexpensive, sturdy, and easy to assemble.
About LWA Antenna System
As shown in the picture below, it consisted of four triangular inclined blades (wings), an enclosure for active baluns (balun / preamp) at the apex of the triangle, a center mast and rod, and a ground state (fastener). It has an inverted V shape.
By expanding the blades, a large opening is constructed, and a distant radiation pattern or light source is captured by a minimum frequency of 5 to 90 MHz (HF / VHF).For example, 1 to 8 antennas are used for solar radio observations and astronomical surveys.
LWA-SYS configuration
LWA-SYS Is a cross-dipole antenna (LWA-ANT) consisting of four blades and stanchions, reading electronics for observation (LWA-FEE) housed in a rectangular housing above the antenna, and a ground to support the central stanchion. It is a set product that includes one stake (LWA-STK) each.
The design frequency of the antenna is about 5MHz to 90MHz, it is driven into the ground, and the height is 1.52m above the ground.
Antenna pattern
An omnidirectional dome-shaped antenna pattern can be obtained as a tilting element.It covers a range from horizontal to near horizontal, but low elevation makes it less responsive.If directivity is required, beamforming can be performed in post-processing and it can be designed as an array antenna.
