[Comparison Verification] Shooting objects placed at a short distance with multiple 3D cameras

Our overseas product procurement and consultation service for R&DUnipos” offers a wide range of 3D cameras.

Although there are many types of 3D cameras, they all have similar sizes and shapes. .
Therefore, this time, we used the actual 3D camera at our company to perform "verification specialized for short distances", so we would like to introduce it.

About the verifier

In this verification, we used the following four devices that are good at shooting at relatively short distances (7 cm to 30 cm).

Company Product Name Product Name Min range >Max range
Intel RealSense D435   0.3m 3m
Intel RealSense D405 7cm (0.07m) *ideal 50cm (0.5m) *ideal
StereoLab ZED 2i Stereo Camera (without polarizer / 2mm lens) 0.2m 20m
NextVPU Feynman M1 Standard 0.1m 5.0m

About the environment

[Items used for verification]

In addition to the 3D camera, it is a target to be photographed, a tripod for installing the 3D camera, a cutting board (A1 size), a cable for connecting the 3D camera, and a PC.

[Layout image]

As shown in the image below, the targets to be photographed are placed at positions 20, 40, 60, and 80 cm from where the camera is installed.Move only the central target and check the close-range shooting conditions.
After that, each camera moves the target to a position where depth information can be acquired and performs close-range photography.

Let's verify!Comparison of close-range object photography

Compare how close objects can be detected in an indoor environment.

Results [1] RealSense D435

With a wide viewing angle (approximately 90°), the D435 is a suitable device for navigation and tracking applications such as robots and drones.Close-up photography is possible even though the maximum depth is a little over 10m.

Above is a RealSense D20 shot of a target placed at a fixed position (40, 60, 80, 435cm).Place a target for close-range photography here, and shoot while approaching the D435.

Minimum detection distance (manufacturer's nominal value) at 0.3mup to 16 cm I was able to get closer.

The lower left image (light blue part) is the target image after movement. It clearly shows its shape.

Results [2] RealSense D405

The D405 is a short-range specialized device intended for use in pick-and-place, defective product inspection, assembly line inspection, detailed inspection, wound inspection equipment, and wound management in robotic surgery (surgical assist robots).

Targets positioned at fixed positions (20, 40, 60, 80cm) were photographed with the RealSense D405.The depth is captured more accurately, including the background.
Place a target for close-range shooting here, and shoot while approaching the D405.

At a minimum detection distance (manufacturer's nominal value) of 7 cm,up to 6 cm I was able to get closer.

The target image after movement is taken in the foreground.

Results [3] ZED 2i Stereo Camera

ZED 2i Stereo CameraIs a stereo camera that supports IP66, a dustproof and waterproof standard that is resistant to dust, water, and humidity, and can be used in environments that require durability such as medical care, agriculture, and industry.

Targets positioned at fixed positions (20, 40, 60, 80cm) were photographed with the RealSense D405.The depth is captured more accurately, including the background.
Place a target for close-range shooting here, and shoot while approaching the D405.

According to the manufacturer's nominal value20cm.

However, as you can see in the image below, the two targets in the back (2 and 60cm) are not detected.

Therefore, when I changed the shooting target from a single color to one with shading, I found that it was detected without any problems.

With a passive type stereo camera, depth information cannot be calculated when the hue of the target object is flat and there is no parallax between the left and right cameras.

Results [4] Feynman M1 Standard

Feynman is a device that can be used in a wide range of applications such as self-driving cars, UAVs, AGVs, robotics, AR/VR, drones, AIoT, 3D scanning, smart locks, and industrial applications (inspection equipment, detection equipment).

Targets placed at fixed positions (20, 40, 60, 80cm) were photographed with the Feynman M1.
Place a target for close-range shooting here, and shoot while approaching Feynman.

Feynman M1 has a minimum detection distance (manufacturer's nominal value) of 10 cm,19.5cm was the result.

When I inquired again about the nominal value, the manufacturer replied, "By setting the resolution of RGB and Depth to 320 x 200, it is possible to measure up to 10 cmI received information that
I immediately changed the resolution setting and measured again.

As a result,up to about 8cmI was able to detect it.

Result Summary

Company Product Name Min range (nominal) Actual value in this environment
Intel RealSense D435 0.3m 16cm (0.16m)
Intel RealSense D405 7cm (0.07m) *ideal 6cm (0.06m)
Stereolabs ZED 2i Stereo Camera (without polarizer / 2mm lens) 0.2m 20cm (0.2m)
NextVPU Feynman M1 Standard 0.1m 19.5cm (0.195m) *8cm @320 x 200px
