Virtual Foundry's moldable metal filament "Filamet 3D Printing FilamentPage was added.
The 3D printer market is expanding year by year. There are a wide range of materials that can be used as modeling materials, including resins, metals, and ceramics.
Therefore, this time, we would like to introduce the metal filaments of Virtual Foundry, which handles various materials.
Filamet – What is Metal Filament?
The material required for modeling with a standard 3D printer (FDM/FFF 3D printer) is called "filament".
The Virtual Foundry's Filamet is a metal filament composed of metal powder and resin binder. After 3D printing, it goes through a debinding (degreasing) process and is fired in a high-temperature kiln, making it almost completely metal.
The greatest feature of these materials isIt works with standard 3D printers you already own.No special hardware required. Its relatively low cost helps reduce tooling and machining costs.
We offer a wide range of 3D printing filaments and pellets that make it easy and affordable to print solid metal, ceramic and glass parts.
Please refer to the various filaments on the manufacturer's web page below.

Print / Debind / Sinter
Equipment common to all work is a standard 3D printer (FDM/FFF 3D printer) and an electric kiln.
The FDM method (Fused Deposition Modeling) and the FFF method (Fused Filament Fabrication) are representative modeling methods for 3D printers. In either case, the materials are melted with heat and piled up into a shape. The finished model is relatively strong, so it is widely used in research and development.
You can refer to the 3D printing procedure using bronze on the manufacturer's web page below.

About Virtual Foundry Products
It is a company that provides services to various public and private research institutions, including the US National Laboratory, NASA.
We are constantly updating our materials list, including 99.9% pure silver Filamet, which is currently in testing, and the addition of new materials developed in-house.In addition to 14 types of filaments such as cobalt, iron, nickel, and titanium, we have the technology to turn various materials into filaments for 3D printing.
Materials with unique properties such as calibration of bone densitometers, 3D printed piezoelectric materials, ferromagnets, electromagnetic cores, graphene, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, etc., and new materials that meet the needs of users can also be consulted.
Please feel free to contact us so that we can check if we can handle it.
Benefits of 3D printing with metal filaments
- Low barriers to entry
- Familiar equipment and processes can be continued as they are
- small energy consumption
- Compatible with printers with mature technology (FFF method of the oldest 3D printer)
- Reduced hardware costs
- High flexibility (printer customization, etc.)
- A safer solution (chemical substances are less likely to occur during debinding)
You can see the basic usage of Filamet in the following video
Examples of products handled
Copper film
Copper/metal filament, one of the easiest materials to print and sinter. It contains 87.0% to 90.7% metal and has a density of 4.8g/cc to 5.0g/cc.
Available in 0.5kg or 1kg spools of filament and 1kg bags of pellets.
You can choose either 1.75mm or 2.85mm filament.
Main Applications: Induction Coils, Electronics, Heat Sinks, Antimicrobial Applications, and Research
Stainless Steel 316L Film
Low carbon stainless steel/metal filament. It contains 80.0% to 85.0% metal and has a density of 3.5g/cc.
Available in 0.5kg or 1kg spools of filament and 1kg bags of pellets.
You can choose either 1.75mm or 2.85mm filament.
Primary Use : Aerospace and Automotive Research
- Do not allow the spool to dry out as it absorbs less moisture than standard PLA
- We do not recommend using a filament dryer
- When fired, it becomes 100% metal
*For other The Virtual Foundry products, please let us know the desired product name, product URL, etc.We will investigate.
About SDS (Safety Data Sheet)
English SDS for each material can be found on the following page.
In addition, depending on the desired material, when importingJapanese SDS may be required. If you have any questions, please contact us (we can prepare Japanese SDS).
