Why is high-quality video capture possible?

Lifelike digital humans are an essential part of many interactive experiences, and the believability of a character's appearance is an important aspect of demonstrating their value. However, creating engaging digital human avatars for interactive 3D experiences has traditionally required considerable time and expense.

Challenges of creating traditional 3D human characters

These production constraints have prevented many creators and companies from taking advantage of the interactivity and immersion of interactive 3D.

 

Depthkit solution

Depthkit was introduced to solve the above problems. This portable volumetric video solution provides an alternative to traditional 3D digital puppets by using an array of cameras surrounding the subject to provide high-fidelity video capture of the subject's performance. This production process is similar to regular video production, so it's faster and requires fewer technical skills.

The biggest appeal of Depthkit

Depth cameras are a low-cost, portable form factor that produces high-quality volumetric video and powers Depthkit's magical capabilities. In addition to capturing color footage, depth cameras also sense the environment in which the subject is placed and the shape of objects.

It incorporates active lasers and sensors built into the camera hardware, from which separate depth videos are generated. The combination of both depth and color streams allows Depthkit to perform highly accurate 10D reconstructions at full motion frame rates with as few as 3 cameras or fewer. Without active laser depth sensing capabilities, 30 to 100 standard color video cameras would be required to achieve comparable capture quality.

Achieves almost double the color resolution of conventional products without changing the cost.

The Femto Bolt is a replacement for the Azure Kinect DK, with some differences, most notably being an HDR (high dynamic range) capable camera, which allows it to capture a wide dynamic range of light. Image quality has been almost doubled, achieving natural colors and gradations under a variety of lighting environments, including details even in areas with high contrast between light and dark, and subjects appearing clearly even when backlit. theseIt is believed that the design details contribute to the significant quality improvement.

Easy to integrate into products

Orbbec Femto Bolt has a simple and intuitive design compared to Azure Kinect DK. Physically installing and connecting the hardware is simple and does not require any special skills or specialized knowledge. Support for common protocols and interfaces allows for quick and efficient integration of existing systems, software, and hardware.

Compact design increases portability and ease of installation

Keeping Depthkit portable and flexible was one of Scatter's top priorities. Femto Bolt is half the size of Azure Kinect DK. The miniaturized form factor provides portability and ease of installation.

Excellent color image quality

When compared to the Azure Kinect DK, Femto Bolt not only matches the quality of depth sensing, but also clearly improves color images. optionalHDR (High Dynamic Range) modeThis allows for rich colors to be reproduced even under harsh lighting conditions.

Femto Bolt completely reduces lens flare and glare caused by 360° surround-inside-out lighting configurations, enabling high-quality capture even in high-contrast situations. This reduces texture artifacts and inconsistencies in multi-camera captures, resulting in better final capture results.

 

Calibration is 4x more accurate than Azure Kinect DK

With Femto Bolt, factory calibration is highly accurate and greatly reduces calibration issues with Azure Kinect DK. Depthkit Studio's multi-camera calibration is now sharper, with accurate onboard alignment between depth and color, eliminating spills and ghosting in texturing.
Additionally, the efficiency of Orbbec's SDK allows you to capture more color streams at higher resolutions. These advantages enable higher quality multi-camera capture.

Improving clock synchronization accuracy and reducing clock synchronization drift

Reliable clock reduces time synchronization drift by a factor of 10 and eliminates sensor interference. The use of sync hubs and Ethernet cables has been improved with star cable configurations. With this, the professional hardware system deployed in Depthkit Studio synchronized clocks between external audio, cinema cameras, and Azure Kinect DK, significantly reducing temporal drift.

Femto Bolt showed only a one-frame drift for the same capture time, thus removing the need to bridge clocks in hardware. Furthermore, the adoption of Femto Bolt also resolved the intermittent sensor interference issue that was occurring with 1 Azure Kinect cameras.
