Orbbec Femto Mega's 3D vision technology supports Paralympic cyclists [Case Study]

Unipos' popular product, Orbbec's 3D camera "Femto MegaWe would like to introduce an example of how a bike fitting system that uses " is supporting Samantha Bosco, a US Paralympic cyclist.

This article is based on a documentary film produced by BBC StoryWorks and a case study by Orbbec.

3D Vision Technology Supports Paralympic Cyclists

Paralympic cyclist Samantha Bosco is a five-time UCI Para-cycling World Champion and two-time Paralympic bronze medalist who overcame a birth defect in her right leg and multiple surgeries to achieve great things in cycling.

Bosco's success is due in part to the cutting-edge technology contained in Orbbec's 3D camera, the Femto Mega.

The role technology played in Samantha Bosco's success

Bosco's success in cycling is driven not only by her physical and mental strength, but also by cutting-edge technological solutions.

A proper bike fit is essential for comfort, efficiency, improved performance and injury prevention, but for athletes with specific training needs like Bosco, achieving a perfect bike fit can be difficult.

To address this challenge, Bosco turned to 3D motion analysis using a system that combines Orbbec's Femto Mega ToF camera with Velogic Studio cycling analysis software from Velogicfit.

3D Vision Technology Helps Cyclist Win World Championship

And because cycling's a very dynamic motion, the more data we can have about where the joints are and how the muscles are moving through the range of motions, the more accurate we can be.

Cycling is a very dynamic sport, so the more data we have about how your joints are positioned and your muscles are moving through their range of motion, the more accurate our recommendations will be.
(Comment from Mr. Paraic, Bosco's bike fitting trainer)

Femto Mega's wide field of view, high consistency, accuracy of RGBD data, and PoE connection for synchronization contribute to improving the accuracy of 3D motion capture with Velogic Studio.

The combined technology allowed the system to precisely measure joint angles and movement during 15 seconds of captured cycling motion to optimize Bosco's bike fit, providing the perfect bike settings for her specific needs and improving her performance.
