Announcement of RealityCapture 1.5 release [Unipos]

The latest version of the RealityCapture series by Epic Games Slovakia, "RealityCapture 1.5", has been released!

What's new in RealityCapture 1.5

Photogrammetry is a technology that generates a 3D model of an object based on multiple photographs, and is used in a wide range of fields, including architecture, cultural heritage preservation, and game production.

Reality Captureis a professional tool that uses cutting-edge photogrammetry technology to generate highly accurate 3D models from still images and laser scan data. Version 1.5 further improves processing speed and quality, opening up new possibilities in the 3D modeling industry.

Main new features and improvements

High-speed processing

A new texturing algorithm and code optimization reduces input/output (IO) reads and writes and improves CPU utilization efficiency. Texturing speed has increased by approximately 20-40%, enabling smooth processing even with large data sets and significantly reducing work time.

High quality texture generation

Photo-consistency based texturing works with high quality 16-bit and 32-bit image data, making it easy to create detailed and realistic textures, especially when working with transparent objects such as glass and water, as well as face, full body scans, and laser scan data.
When taking a photo, there are areas that are in the shadow of an object or hidden and difficult to see, but this new function makes it possible to more naturally fill in those "invisible areas," achieving a smooth, consistent texture, even in the hidden areas.

In addition, by using the mask function, you can easily remove backgrounds and unnecessary colors that you do not want to texture. As a result, the finished texture is sharp, clear, and looks great. It makes creating realistic models even more fun.

Creating non-closed meshes

The newly added "ReconstructionWith the "Remove Triangles" feature, you can easily remove unnecessary small triangles and create lightweight non-watertight meshes. This reduces file size, saves storage space, and improves loading times.
In real-time applications such as games and simulations, lightweight models are often important, and this function is particularly useful in such situations.

USD export support and new export formats added

Universal Scene Description (USD) Integration with real-time applications is now easier with new formats supported, including the following new export formats to support a variety of workflows:

  • Colmap Model: A format widely used in photogrammetry and SLAM
  • Normal Texture Maps for GLB: Achieving more realistic 3D expression
  • 16-bit PNG support for DTM (Digital Elevation Model) and DSM (Digital Ground Model): Accurate output of altitude data possible

These new features are expected to enable more flexible and efficient data utilization across a wide range of industries and applications.

Optimized texture fragmentation

This is a new function that efficiently organizes the texture of a model and maintains an optimal data structure. The conventional Tiny UV Islands (small UV parts) were inefficient for real-time engines and had the following issues:

  • Excessive GPU memory consumption
  • Increasing the number of vertex shader calls
  • Visual artifacts at seams

RealityCapture 1.5 now includes "UV optimization" to solve these issues. This improves the quality of UV maps, reduces GPU load, and improves the visual finish. This is expected to improve performance, especially in projects that use real-time engines.
