A client involved in research and development of chemical products contacted us with a request for a workstation for CAE with a budget of around 200 million yen.
The workstation will be installed for fluid and powder calculations using STAR-CCM+ and iGRAF, and for the time being, parallel calculations on the CPU will be the main focus.
Since there are plans to use GPU calculations as an extension to the software in the future, we understand that you would like to install a GPU with a certain level of specifications at the initial stage.
Based on the customer's request, we proposed the following configuration:
CPU | AMD Ryzen ThreadripperPRO 7965WX 4.20GHz (boost 5.3GHz) 24C/48T |
memory | Total 256GB DDR5 5600 REG ECC 32GB x 8 |
storage | 1TB SSD M.2 NVMe Gen4 |
Video | NVIDIA RTX4500 Ada 24GB (DisplayPort x4) |
network | on board (10GBase-T x2) |
Housing + power supply | Mid-tower case 1000W 80PLUS PLATINUM |
OS | Microsoft Windows 11 Professional 64bit |
Configuration that prioritizes CPU clock speed and memory bandwidth
The important factors in terms of processing speed are clock speed and memory bandwidth. Given the delivery situation and specs at the time of the announcement, we proposed a configuration using Threadripper Pro. Threadripper Pro has an 8-channel memory configuration, and in terms of clock speed, it has the same or better performance as a Xeon configuration.
If memory channels are taken into consideration, a 2-CPU configuration is an option, but considering the budget, we are proposing a 1-CPU configuration in this case.
GPU selection
The GPU calculation requirements for STAR-CCM+ recommend a card with higher bandwidth memory (HMB6/2) than GDDR3, so we used the RTX4500 Ada. The requirements for iGRAF are in accordance with SolidWorks, so any RTX series GPU can support it.

■ Keywords・What is STAR-CCM+? STAR-CCM+ is an advanced multi-physics CFD simulation software provided by Siemens. It features a single integrated environment that can handle everything from importing CAD data to processing results. It supports a wide range of physical phenomena, including fluid dynamics, heat transfer, particle dynamics, and reacting flows, and enables efficient analysis through automatic mesh generation and design exploration functions. It is used in a wide range of industrial fields, including automotive, aerospace, electrical and electronics, and architecture.
What is iGRAF? iGRAF (Integrated Granular Flow Simulation Software) is a powder and multi-phase flow simulation software developed as an add-in product for SolidWorks. It combines the discrete element method (DEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to enable highly accurate analysis that considers the effects of fluids. It is equipped with an interface that is easy for beginners to use, a random packing function, and a coarse-grained model that reduces the calculation load, and it achieves both reproducibility and efficiency for a variety of processes. |
