When a user enters a particular paper into Connected Papers, it quickly displays other papers that are strongly related to that paper. This is primarily based on citation analysis. It dramatically accelerates background understanding of research topics as well as discovery of relevant papers.
It is endorsed by many literature users, including researchers, graduate students, authors, reviewers and librarians.

The history of Connected Papers
Connected Papers was developed as a tool for science, but its origins can be traced back to weekend side projects between friends.Having worked with academic papers for many years, they were acutely aware of the importance of literature search workflows. The experience and knowledge of these people, who have backgrounds as developers but also have a user's perspective, led to the creation of a truly practical tool.

How does it work?
- First, we analyze approximately 5 papers and select dozens of papers that are most closely related to the original text.
- Connected Papers is not a citation tree.On the graph, articles are arranged based on their similarity. As a result, even papers that are not directly cited will be placed closely together if they are highly similar.
- The Connected Papers similarity metric is based on the concepts of co-citation and document linking.According to this criterion, papers with significant duplication of citations and references are likely to cover related topics.
- The algorithm then uses a dynamic graph to visually cluster similar papers, placing papers with low similarity farther from each other.Selecting a node highlights the shortest path from that node to the original paper based on similarity.
- The Connected Papers database is linked with Semantic Scholar's corpus of papers (used under ODC-BY license). The team has amassed hundreds of millions of papers across a wide range of scientific disciplines, and the results are impressive.
