[Article] Execution time measurement and comparison of "MAGMA Computational Algebra System" with current CPU and CPU overclocking

■ This is an article posted on June 2017, 5, so the content of the information may be out of date.

In 2011, using the MAGMA sample program published at the University of Sydney,Benchmark on each CPUWas released, but in that case, the result that a CPU with a single thread and a high clock was more effective.

This time, when running the sample program used in the test at that time, it is considered to be the most effective in the current PC proposal case Case No.PC-4547 I tested how much effect can be expected with the CPU overclocking model (CPU: Core i7 7700K).

・ Verification environment (example PC-4547 / Details)

Verification 1: Comparison with previous generation CPU

From the time of the previous measurement to the verification environment used this time, there have been several generations of hardware updates, and first I tried to measure how much difference the result will be with "no overclocking". ..As a result,Previous measurement resultThe speed difference was almost double that of (the calculation was completed in half the time compared to the hardware at the time of the previous test).

In this test, since the same version of the program as the previous test was used for measurement, even if the multi-core software is not valid, the CPU architecture is updated, which improves the processing capacity beyond the clock difference. You can see that it can be expected. Speaking of MAGMA, the results may change due to future program upgrades, etc., but regarding the results of the sample program used for this test, it is not possible to switch from the old generation machine to the current hardware. I think it is effective.

Verification 2: Core i7 7700K rating / TB / OC comparison

Next, with the hardware (CPU Core i7 7700K) of the verification environment this time, rated (4.2 GHz * Multiple calculations run, TB does not work), Turbo Boost enabled (4.5 GHz * Assign calculation only to 1 core) The same program as Verification 5.0 was measured in three states, OverClock (3GHz). As a result, the overclocking model produced a reasonable speed difference due to the clock difference.

Not limited to MAGMA, if you are using a program specialized for single thread and want to speed up even a little, or if you want to run multiple calculations at the same time, select an overclocking model that does not have a clock drop. Wouldn't it be an effective option?

【point】

-We will set and adjust the CPU overclocking at our company before shipping (it will be shipped after checking the stable operation by performing a load and temperature test in a dedicated room).

-Normally, the warranty does not cover failures due to CPU overclocking performed by the customer, but the machines in this case will be covered by the normal warranty.
