Intel RealSense Depth Camera D455f

The D455f is a new addition to the Intel RealSense lineup. The new model utilizes stereo vision technology to perform depth calculations. In addition to the features of the existing model D455, a new IR pass filter has been introduced.

The IR pass filter serves to reduce the loss of depth data caused by sunlight and reflected light. This makes it possible to reduce depth noise caused by light reflections and glare.

A common problem with depth cameras is the false detection of duplicates of identical or similar patterns, resulting in errors from the actual object position. The new D455f does a great job of eliminating this problem.

For the specifications of the base D455, please refer to the following article.

Main features of the D455f

  • Introduced 750nm near-infrared filter improves the accuracy of depth data*
  • Can be used effectively both indoors and outdoors by suppressing the effects of bright places and reflections
  • Equipped with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) for excellent motion tracking capability
  • Corrects deviations in depth data due to movement, enabling high-precision data acquisition even with drones and autonomous robots
  • Designed based on the existing D455 model (same shape/specifications, but 0.8mm deeper)

*What is an IR pass filter?

It is made by attaching a CLAREX NIR-75N near-infrared filter to a cover glass. This filter absorbs visible light while transmitting near-infrared light. This preserves light quality and improves device performance.

*Please refer to the following article for the verification of the filter effect (verification machine is D435).

Comparison of D455f / D455

The table below summarizes the differences between the D455f and D455.

Item D455F  NEW! D455
Depth Filter IR pass All-pass
Length 124mm × 29mm × 26.8 mm 124 29 mm × mm × mm 26
Ambient light spectrum Infrared light only Both visible and infrared light
Repetitive pattern Relieves depth map saturation Can cause incorrect depth values
Specular reflections Relieve saturation May cause image saturation
L / R images Limited by the intensity of the surrounding infrared rays Usable in all lighting conditions
